THE CRYSTAL STAIR

Book 3 in thecomplete 9-volume Gom series

Gom sets out to find a master who will take him on as an apprentice wizard. He makes new friends - and enemies, he learns to endure, and is reminded of his need at times to keep his mouth more firmly closed. In the end, he finds that you don't always get exactly what you ask for. The book is about staying alive, keeping your nerve, learning how to compromise and to endure despite all odds.

Gom goes with Harga "alamar" - in a sort of virtual reality - to a strange place that is filled with mist. Looming out of the mist are spiral steps climbing up out of sight. The steps are small platforms made of crystal and wide enough to take just one foot. Before he knows it, Harga vanishes and he is commanded to climb on alone.

Walking home at twilight through the misty mountain air, / High above a darkling world without a soul to care; / See a light shine from my door, a shadow waiting there: / Wife, who came in mystery, my lonely life to share! // Climbing home at twilight up a winding mountain path, / To the sound of laughter and the warmth of open hearth, / Loving arms embrace me, children gather round my chair: / Wife, you came in mystery, a joyous life to share!
